About Trafalgar

Trafalgar is one of the world's most popular escorted touring brands, founded in 1947 and now part of The Travel Corporation (TTC) family, which also includes Insight Vacations, Contiki, Costsaver, and Brendan Vacations. Trafalgar operates 300+ itineraries across Europe, the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Australasia and is known for its signature “Be My Guest” local dining experiences, “Hidden Gems” off-the-beaten-path inclusions, and MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® responsible travel commitment.

Both brands are part of The Travel Corporation, but target different price points and travel styles. Trafalgar is the core mid-premium product: solid hotels, comprehensive destination coverage, generous inclusions, and groups of up to 52 guests. Insight Vacations is the premium tier: finer hotels (4–5 star), more upscale dining, smaller groups (max 40), and a more unhurried pace. The price difference is typically 15–25%. Your Pavlus advisor can compare specific itineraries for your destination.

Trafalgar tours accommodate up to 52 passengers, which is a standard size for mainstream escorted touring. Groups are well-managed and led by a professional Travel Director who knows every guest by name. The group size means you'll meet a wide variety of fellow travelers from around the world, making it naturally social. If you prefer a smaller group, Insight Vacations (max 40) or Tauck (typically 24–40) may be a better fit.

Trafalgar's professional guides are called Travel Directors. They accompany the group throughout the entire tour, managing all logistics, leading included sightseeing, providing cultural context, and ensuring every guest has the best possible experience. Trafalgar Travel Directors go through TTC's comprehensive training program and many are industry veterans with years of experience leading tours in their specialist regions. They are supported by licensed local “Local Specialists” at key attractions.

Yes — through TTC Loyalty (The Travel Corporation's multi-brand loyalty program), returning Trafalgar guests earn benefits including past-passenger discounts on future tours. The program also applies across TTC brands, so travel with Insight Vacations, Contiki, or Costsaver also accumulates toward loyalty recognition. When booking through Pavlus, make sure your advisor applies your past-guest status to access available discounts.

Signature Experiences

“Be My Guest” is Trafalgar's signature local dining program, included on most European and select global itineraries. Guests are hosted for a meal at a local family home, working farm, vineyard, or artisan producer — a genuine home-hosted or estate dinner, not a staged restaurant meal. These experiences give guests an authentic window into daily local life and are consistently cited as the highlight of Trafalgar tours. The meal, food, and beverages are included in the tour price.

Hidden Gems are exclusive local experiences that Trafalgar has uncovered and made accessible only to their guests — a private wine cellar tasting in a family-run Chianti estate, a behind-the-scenes visit to a traditional tile workshop in Lisbon, or a private concert in a Roman palazzo. They are not in any guidebook and cannot be independently replicated. Hidden Gems are included in the tour price and vary by itinerary.

MAKE TRAVEL MATTER Experiences are meaningful encounters with social enterprises, conservation projects, and community organizations that create positive impact in the places Trafalgar visits. Examples include visiting a social bakery employing refugees in Berlin, supporting a women's weaving cooperative in Peru, or helping with a wildlife conservation project in South Africa. These are included in the tour price and are not optional add-ons — they are built into the itinerary as core experiences.

At major historical and cultural attractions, Trafalgar engages Local Specialists — licensed, expert guides who provide specialist knowledge at specific sites. A Local Specialist at the Alhambra has deep knowledge of Moorish architecture and history; one at the Louvre brings art-historical expertise. These professionals complement your Travel Director's broader destination knowledge with site-specific depth.

What's Included

Trafalgar fares are generously inclusive:

  • Quality hotel accommodation throughout
  • Daily breakfasts and a selection of dinners including the “Be My Guest” experience
  • Motorcoach transportation with a professional driver
  • Professional Travel Director throughout
  • Included sightseeing and entrance fees including Hidden Gems exclusive experiences
  • MAKE TRAVEL MATTER social impact experiences

Most lunches, some dinners, gratuities, optional excursions, and personal expenses are additional.

Gratuities are not included in the standard Trafalgar fare. Trafalgar recommends tipping the Travel Director approximately $5–$7 per person per day and the driver approximately $2–$3 per person per day. Budget approximately $8–$12 per person per day for recommended gratuities. Some Trafalgar promotional fares or booking packages include gratuities — ask your Pavlus advisor whether this applies to your specific tour and departure.

In addition to the tour price, plan for:

  • Gratuities: ~$8–$12 per person per day
  • Lunches: $15–$35 per person (most are on your own)
  • Optional excursions: $30–$80+ per activity
  • Shopping and souvenirs
  • Beverages at meals and during free time

A reasonable daily budget beyond the tour price is approximately $60–$100 per person per day.

Itineraries & Destinations

Trafalgar operates 300+ itineraries across the globe:

  • Europe — From Britain and Ireland to Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, and the Mediterranean
  • The Americas — USA national parks, Canada, Mexico, Peru, Argentina, Brazil, and more
  • Africa — Egypt, Morocco, Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa
  • Asia & the Pacific — Japan, Southeast Asia, India, Australia, and New Zealand
  • The Middle East — Israel, Jordan, and the Holy Land

Trafalgar tours range from 7 to 20+ days. The most popular European itineraries run 8–14 days. Shorter “Getaway” style tours of 7–9 days are available for travelers with less vacation time, while comprehensive “Grand Tour” itineraries cover entire regions in 15–22 days. Your Pavlus advisor can recommend the right length for your destination and pace preference.

For first-time Europe visitors, Trafalgar's comprehensive “Best of Europe” style tours covering 5–8 countries in 12–16 days are extremely popular and provide a broad introduction to the continent's highlights. If you have a specific country or region in mind, Trafalgar's regional tours (Best of Italy, European Whirl, etc.) provide deeper coverage. Your Pavlus advisor can match you to the right itinerary based on your bucket-list destinations and available time.

Pacing & Free Time

Trafalgar offers a good balance between comprehensive destination coverage and comfortable pacing. Most tours spend 2–3 nights in major cities, allowing for full sightseeing days and independent exploration time. The group moves regularly between destinations, but Trafalgar builds rest and free time into the schedule. Some first-time tour travelers find the pace energizing; others who prefer to linger in one place may feel it moves quickly. If you want a slower pace with more nights per destination, consider Insight Vacations or Tauck.

Yes — participation in included activities is never mandatory. If you'd rather spend an afternoon wandering the streets of Rome independently than joining a guided tour, that is entirely your prerogative. Your Travel Director will note who is joining each activity and is always available to provide recommendations for independent exploration. Free time is built into every Trafalgar itinerary, and the program is structured to accommodate different preferences.

Every Trafalgar itinerary offers a selection of optional excursions that guests can book through their Travel Director during the tour. Examples include gondola rides, flamenco shows, Rhine River cruises, cooking classes, evening light shows, and cultural performances. Optional excursions typically cost $35–$100+ per person. They are genuinely optional — not purchasing them is entirely normal, as the included program is comprehensive.

On most Trafalgar tour days, coach travel between destinations takes 2–3 hours. Longer transfer days occasionally occur when crossing regions or countries, but these typically include scenic en-route stops. Trafalgar coaches are modern, air-conditioned, and comfortable. Seat rotation is practiced so no guest is permanently in the back row. On days with significant included sightseeing, the coach serves primarily as transport between sites rather than as a viewing platform.

Accommodations

Trafalgar uses 3.5- to 4-star hotels in central, convenient locations in each city. Hotels are selected for cleanliness, service quality, and proximity to sightseeing areas. Trafalgar refers to their hotel standard as “Comfort” class — solid, well-maintained properties that are more than adequate for a comfortable night's stay after a full touring day. In some destinations, Trafalgar uses more distinctive properties that add character to the overall experience.

Yes — Trafalgar offers a Singles Guarantee on select departures, providing a private room at no single supplement for solo travelers. On other departures, a single supplement applies. Trafalgar tours are also popular with solo travelers because the group format makes socializing natural and the Travel Director ensures no one feels isolated. Ask your Pavlus advisor which departures currently have Singles Guarantee pricing when you call 800-528-9300.

Yes — bed-type preferences (double/queen vs. twin) can be noted at booking and are communicated to hotels. Requests are not guaranteed, but Trafalgar and their hotel partners make reasonable efforts to accommodate them, especially when the request is made well in advance. Your Pavlus advisor will record your preference at time of reservation.

Practical Information

Trafalgar typically requires a deposit of $200 per person to reserve a tour, with final payment due approximately 60–90 days before departure. Cancellation penalties apply on a sliding scale — penalties increase as departure approaches, with little or no refund in the final 30 days. Trafalgar's current cancellation schedule is provided at the time of booking. Travel insurance is strongly recommended.

Yes, strongly recommended. Travel insurance protects against trip cancellation, trip interruption, emergency medical expenses, medical evacuation, and baggage loss. Trafalgar offers their own travel protection plan, and third-party policies are widely available. Your Pavlus advisor can help you evaluate options. Purchase coverage at the same time as your deposit — doing so maximizes the “cancel for any reason” coverage window available on most comprehensive policies.

Most Trafalgar tours require moderate fitness: walking 2–4 miles per day, managing stairs and uneven surfaces (cobblestones are common in historic European centers), and standing for extended periods at attractions. Trafalgar rates each itinerary by activity level. If you have mobility limitations, discuss them with your Pavlus advisor before booking — some Trafalgar itineraries are more accessible than others.

Your Travel Director is trained in first aid and is your immediate contact for any health concern. Trafalgar's operations team provides 24/7 support, and your Director can help arrange local medical care, coordinate with your travel insurer, or facilitate an early return home if necessary. Travel insurance with emergency medical and evacuation coverage is strongly recommended for this reason.

You will need a valid passport with at least 6 months validity beyond your return date. Visa requirements vary by destination and nationality — your Trafalgar tour documents will specify entry requirements for each country on the itinerary. US citizens can enter most EU countries without a visa, but some destinations (India, China, Australia, etc.) require advance visa applications. Your Pavlus advisor can help clarify entry requirements for your specific tour.

For peak-season European departures (June–August), booking 6–9 months in advance is recommended — popular departures sell out early.
