About Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean International is one of the world’s most recognized cruise brands, sailing since 1969 and now operating 28 ships ranging from large resort ships to the absolute largest vessels afloat. The line is owned by Royal Caribbean Group, which also owns Celebrity Cruises and Silversea.

Royal Caribbean is best for:

  • Active families who want FlowRiders, rock climbing walls, zip lines, and waterparks alongside traditional cruise activities
  • First-time cruisers looking for a polished, amenity-rich experience with something for everyone
  • Couples who want variety — from specialty dining and spa to Broadway-caliber shows
  • Suite travelers seeking the Royal Suite Class and Star Class all-inclusive genie experience
Royal Caribbean consistently wins major cruise industry awards and ranks among the top mainstream lines in guest satisfaction year after year.

All three are mainstream lines at similar price points, but they differ meaningfully:

  • Royal Caribbean — Best onboard attractions (surf simulators, ice rinks, sky-high zip lines), most ambitious private island (Perfect Day at CocoCay), and the highest-profile mega-ships. Generally the most activity-forward line in mainstream cruising.
  • Norwegian Cruise Line — Best dining flexibility (Freestyle Dining, no assigned times), strongest all-inclusive promotions (Free at Sea), and The Haven luxury suite complex. Appeals to guests who value independence.
  • Carnival — Most affordable, most casual atmosphere, strongest short-cruise and first-timer appeal. Less ambitious ships and itineraries at a lower price point.

For families and guests who want the biggest ships with the most to do, Royal Caribbean is typically the strongest choice.

Icon of the Seas, launched in January 2024, is the world’s largest cruise ship, carrying approximately 5,610 guests. Key features include:

  • Category 6 waterpark — the largest waterpark at sea, with multiple record-breaking slides
  • 8 distinct neighborhoods — each with its own design theme, dining, and activities
  • Central Park — an outdoor garden neighborhood with restaurants and bars
  • The Pearl — a dramatic multi-deck pool complex at the heart of the ship
  • AquaDome — a glass dome with a pool and waterfall at the bow of the ship
  • Exclusive neighborhood for suite guests: The Suite Neighborhood
Icon of the Seas sails Caribbean itineraries from Miami. Sailings book out well in advance — call Pavlus at 800-528-9300 early to secure your preferred cabin.

Royal Caribbean operates several ship classes ranging from large to record-breaking:

  • Icon class (Icon of the Seas, Star of the Seas) — 7,000+ guests; newest and largest; most complete amenity set
  • Oasis class (Oasis, Allure, Harmony, Symphony, Wonder, Utopia) — 5,400–6,900 guests; seven-neighborhood concept; Boardwalk, Central Park, and pool deck neighborhoods
  • Quantum class (Quantum, Ovation, Anthem, Spectrum) — ~4,180 guests; technology-forward with North Star observation capsule, RipCord skydiving simulator, and Two70° entertainment venue
  • Freedom class (Freedom, Liberty, Independence, Navigator) — 3,600–3,800 guests; classic large-ship experience with rock climbing and ice skating
  • Voyager / Vision / Radiance class — 2,000–3,300 guests; strong itinerary variety, including Europe and Alaska

Royal Caribbean is one of the top family cruise lines in the world. Key family highlights:

  • Adventure Ocean — free supervised kids’ program for ages 3–11; divided into age groups with themed activities, STEM programming, and evening parties
  • Teens program — dedicated teen spaces on all ships, including teen lounges and social events
  • Onboard attractions — FlowRider surf simulators, rock climbing walls, zip lines, mini-golf, bumper cars, laser tag (varies by ship)
  • Perfect Day at CocoCay — private island with Thrill Waterpark and Oasis Lagoon (largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean)
Families should confirm which attractions are on their specific ship before booking, as amenities vary significantly between ship classes.

Booking & Deposits

Royal Caribbean deposits are typically $100–$500 per person depending on sailing length and cabin category. Key details:

  • Refundable deposits are available on most sailings at a slightly higher rate — these allow cancellation without penalty up to the final payment date.
  • Non-refundable deposits are common on promotional fares and carry a $100 per person change fee if you need to modify or cancel.
  • Final payment is due 75 days before departure for sailings under 5 nights; 90 days for most longer sailings.
Choosing a refundable deposit rate when booking 12+ months out provides maximum flexibility if your plans change.

For Royal Caribbean, earlier booking generally provides better stateroom selection, especially for:

  • Icon of the Seas and Oasis-class ships — book 12–18 months out; balcony and suite categories sell first
  • Holiday sailings (Christmas, New Year’s, spring break) — book 12+ months out
  • Alaska and Europe itineraries — 9–12 months out for best cabin choice

Royal Caribbean’s Best Price Guarantee allows you to reprice to a lower publicly available rate if prices drop before final payment — so there is little risk to booking early.

Yes — Royal Caribbean’s Best Price Guarantee allows guests to request a fare adjustment if the same category stateroom on the same sailing drops in price before final payment. The adjustment is typically applied as onboard credit or a rate reduction. Pavlus advisors actively monitor fares on their clients’ bookings and will flag repricing opportunities proactively.

Travel insurance is strongly recommended. Royal Caribbean sells its own “Royal Caribbean Travel Protection” plan, but independent policies from providers like Travel Guard, Allianz, or TravelSafe often offer broader coverage at competitive prices. Key considerations:

  • Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) coverage requires purchasing within a short window of your initial deposit (typically 14–21 days)
  • Medical evacuation coverage is especially important for international itineraries
  • Pre-existing condition waivers are only available if you purchase early

Your Pavlus advisor can walk you through insurance options at the time of booking.

What’s Included

The base fare includes a substantial amount — most guests are pleasantly surprised by how much is covered:

  • Dining: Main Dining Room (breakfast, lunch, dinner with waiter service), Windjammer buffet, Park Café, Sorrentino’s Pizza, Cafe Promenade, and other casual venues (varies by ship)
  • Entertainment: Broadway-style production shows, ice skating shows (Oasis class+), AquaTheater dive shows (Oasis class+), comedy, live music, and more
  • Onboard activities: FlowRider surf simulator, rock climbing wall, mini-golf, fitness center, pools, and hot tubs
  • Kids’ programs: Adventure Ocean supervised programming
  • Port taxes and fees
Alcoholic beverages, gratuities, specialty restaurants, shore excursions, spa services, Wi-Fi, and premium activities carry additional charges.

Royal Caribbean charges a daily gratuity (called a “service charge”) of approximately $18–$23 per person per day, automatically added to your onboard account. Suite guests pay a higher rate. Gratuities can be pre-paid at the time of booking, which many guests prefer for easier budgeting. If you purchase a beverage package, an 18% gratuity is added to the package price at purchase.

Royal Caribbean offers Voom, its high-speed satellite internet service. Plans are sold by the device and per day, or as a voyage-long package. Voom is among the faster options in mainstream cruising and is sufficient for streaming, video calls, and remote work. Prices are lower when purchased before sailing online. The Key program and some fare bundles include Voom.

Dining

Royal Caribbean’s Unlimited Dining Package allows guests to dine in participating specialty restaurants as many times as they wish for a flat per-person fee, purchased in advance. Participating venues typically include:

  • Chops Grille — USDA prime steakhouse
  • Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen — house-made pasta and Italian classics
  • Wonderland — avant-garde tasting menu concept
  • Izumi — Japanese hibachi and sushi
  • Jamie’s Italian — on select ships
The package pays for itself after 2–3 specialty dinners and is especially good value on voyages of 5+ nights. Purchase before sailing for the best price — packages sold onboard are typically 10–20% more expensive.

Royal Caribbean offers two Main Dining Room options:

  • Traditional Dining — assigned table, assigned time (Early ~5:30pm or Late ~8:00pm), same waitstaff every night. Best for guests who enjoy the social ritual of a consistent table experience and families with young children who benefit from a predictable schedule.
  • My Time Dining — flexible arrival window within dinner hours; reserve a table in advance or walk up. Best for guests who prefer dining on their own schedule, especially active travelers who may return late from shore excursions.

Both options have the same menu and quality. Book your preferred option when making your reservation — My Time Dining books up, especially at prime 6:00–7:00pm slots.

Yes — Royal Caribbean accommodates a wide range of dietary needs with advance notice. Vegetarian and vegan options are always available on the main dining room menu. Gluten-free, kosher, and halal meals can be arranged through the special dietary request process before sailing. Guests with severe allergies should contact Royal Caribbean’s Access Desk to confirm arrangements. Specialty restaurants can also accommodate most dietary requirements with advance notice to the venue.

Room service is available 24 hours on most Royal Caribbean ships. A continental breakfast is complimentary; other items carry a per-item delivery fee (typically $7.95). The Star Class suite category includes complimentary 24-hour room service with a full menu. Suite guests in Royal Suite Class also have expanded room service options through their Royal Genie.

Onboard Experience

The Key is Royal Caribbean’s premium add-on program (priced per person per day, typically $20–$35/day) that provides:

  • Priority boarding and departure
  • Exclusive hours at onboard activities (FlowRider, rock climbing, zip line) before general opening
  • Complimentary lunch on embarkation day at a specialty restaurant
  • Private seating reserved at entertainment shows
  • Voom Surf + Stream Wi-Fi included
  • Priority debarkation on the last day
The Key pays off most for families with teens and tweens who want guaranteed access to popular activities without waiting. The Wi-Fi inclusion alone often covers most of the cost on 7-night sailings.

Royal Caribbean’s entertainment is among the best in mainstream cruising:

  • Broadway productions — Grease, Mamma Mia!, Hairspray, and others on Oasis-class ships
  • Ice skating shows — professional productions in onboard ice arenas (Oasis class and some other ships)
  • AquaTheater — outdoor high-dive and water acrobatics shows (Oasis class)
  • Two70° — robotic stage and visual entertainment venue (Quantum class)
  • Comedy clubs, live music, and casinos — fleet-wide

Shows are included in your fare. Reserve seats in advance through the Royal Caribbean app — popular shows fill quickly.

Royal Suite Class is Royal Caribbean’s suite tier system, divided into three levels:

  • Star Class — Top tier; includes a personal Royal Genie (dedicated butler), all specialty dining, all beverages (including alcohol), Wi-Fi, gratuities, and priority everything. Cabins include the Sky Loft Suite, Royal Loft Suite, Owner’s Suite, and Ultimate Family Suite.
  • Sky Class — Grand Suites and above; exclusive restaurant (Coastal Kitchen) for breakfast and dinner, priority boarding, and suite lounge access.
  • Sea Class — Junior Suites; priority boarding and other select benefits.
Star Class is a genuine all-inclusive luxury experience at sea. For guests comparing it to land-based luxury resorts, the value proposition is compelling — especially when all dining, drinks, and gratuities are factored in.

Royal Caribbean ships feature a Vitality Spa and Fitness Center on all ships. The fitness center (weights, cardio) is complimentary. Spa services (massages, facials, treatments) are priced individually and can be reserved in advance. Most ships have a casino with slots and table games. Sky Pad (bungee trampoline on select ships) and the North Star observation capsule are typically complimentary or carry a small fee depending on the ship.

Staterooms & Cabins

Royal Caribbean offers the following main cabin categories:

  • Interior — No window; most affordable; many feature virtual window screens on newer ships (Virtual Balcony)
  • Ocean View — Fixed porthole or picture window; no outdoor space
  • Balcony — Private outdoor balcony; most popular category fleet-wide
  • Junior Suite — Larger room with separate seating area and whirlpool tub on most ships
  • Grand Suite / Panoramic Suite — Full suite amenities, separate bedroom
  • Royal Suite / Sky Loft / Owner’s Suite — Top-tier accommodations in the Royal Suite Class
For first-time cruisers, a balcony cabin is often worth the upgrade — the ability to step outside and watch port arrivals from your own space meaningfully enhances the experience.

Yes — most Royal Caribbean staterooms with two beds can be configured as either a king/queen (beds pushed together) or two twin beds (separated). This is typically requested at booking. Families should look for connecting staterooms or cabins with pull-out sofas and upper Pullman bunks for additional guests. The Ultimate Family Suite on Icon of the Seas accommodates up to 8 guests with a slide, in-room theater, and multiple bedrooms.

Ports & Destinations

Perfect Day at CocoCay is Royal Caribbean’s private island in the Bahamas, transformed into a full resort destination. Key features:

  • Thrill Waterpark — home to the tallest waterslide in the Bahamas, multiple slides, and Daredevil’s Peak (separate ticket required, ~$40–$80)
  • Oasis Lagoon — the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean (free with your cruise)
  • Up, Up & Away Helium Balloon — rises 450 feet over the island for panoramic views (extra fee)
  • South Beach & Chill Island — free beach areas with loungers
  • Overwater cabanas — rentable premium experiences
CocoCay consistently ranks as the top private island in the Caribbean. The base island experience (beaches, lagoon, food pavilion) is included in your cruise fare.

Both options have merit:

  • Royal Caribbean excursions — Guaranteed return to the ship (ship won’t leave without booked guests), easy booking through the app, and consistency. Higher cost than independent options.
  • Independent tours — Typically 30–50% less expensive for the same experience; greater flexibility. Requires careful management of time to return before all-aboard.
For first-time visitors to a port, Royal Caribbean shore excursions provide peace of mind. For experienced travelers who have visited before, independent tours offer significant savings.

If you miss the all-aboard time, the ship will depart without you — this applies to everyone, including guests on independent excursions. You are responsible for catching up to the ship at the next port at your own expense. Guests on Royal Caribbean-booked shore excursions are guaranteed the ship will wait if the excursion runs late. Travel insurance with trip interruption coverage can help offset costs if you are left behind due to a legitimate delay.

When you call, you’re speaking with someone who knows the difference between an Oasis-class and a Quantum-class ship firsthand — not a call center reading from a script.

Call us directly at 800-528-9300. As your booking agent, Pavlus acts as your advocate with Royal Caribbean. Whether it’s a pricing discrepancy, a cabin change request, a post-booking issue, or a concern that arises during your voyage, we’ll work to resolve it on your behalf. Having a dedicated advisor is particularly valuable when itinerary changes or ship swaps occur — situations where guests who booked direct are often left navigating hold queues alone.

Yes. Pavlus advisors actively monitor fares on your booking before final payment. If Royal Caribbean drops the price on your sailing or cabin category, we’ll request a fare adjustment on your behalf under Royal Caribbean’s Best Price Guarantee. We proactively look for repricing opportunities — you don’t need to track this yourself.

Having the following ready will make your booking call faster and more productive:

  • Approximate travel dates and flexibility (how much can dates shift?)
  • Number of guests and ages (especially for children)
  • Destination preference (Caribbean, Alaska, Europe, etc.)
  • Cabin type preference (interior, balcony, suite)
  • Crown & Anchor Society membership number(s)
  • Passport information (not required at booking, but helpful to have)
  • Budget range per person

The right booking window depends on your itinerary and flexibility:

  • Icon of the Seas / Oasis class — 12–18 months for best cabin selection; these ships’ best balconies and suites sell out far in advance
  • Holiday and spring break sailings — 12+ months; families compete intensely for connecting cabins and suites
  • Alaska and European itineraries — 9–12 months, especially for balcony and suite categories
  • Caribbean mainstream sailings — 6–9 months is fine for most cabin categories; deals can appear closer in but cabin selection thins
Call Pavlus at 800-528-9300 — we can tell you immediately how much inventory remains on any specific sailing.

Crown & Anchor Loyalty

Crown and Anchor Society is Royal Caribbean’s loyalty program with six tiers based on cruise points (one point per night sailed; additional points for cabin category):

  • Gold (3–29 pts) — Entry; welcome letter, special offers
  • Platinum (30–54 pts) — Priority check-in, complimentary welcome back gift
  • Emerald (55–79 pts) — Discounts on specialty dining and spa
  • Diamond (80–174 pts) — Diamond Lounge access with complimentary drinks daily; priority boarding
  • Diamond Plus (175–699 pts) — Expanded lounge hours, additional OBC
  • Pinnacle Club (700+ pts) — Complimentary cruise, dedicated concierge, access to exclusive events
Diamond status is the tier where benefits become truly significant — the complimentary daily drinks in the Diamond Lounge represent real savings on a 7-night sailing.

Points are earned at a rate of 1 point per night in a standard cabin, with multipliers for higher cabin categories: Junior Suite earns 2x, Grand Suite earns 3x, and higher suite categories earn more. Sailing on back-to-back cruises accumulates points quickly. Royal Caribbean periodically offers double-point promotions on select sailings. Your Pavlus advisor can flag sailings where point multipliers are in effect.
