About Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) was founded in 1966 and pioneered the concept of Freestyle Cruising — a more relaxed, flexible approach that eliminated assigned dining times and formal dress codes. Today NCL operates 19 ships and is best for:

  • Independent travelers who dislike rigid schedules and want to eat when and where they choose
  • Guests who value dining variety — NCL has one of the largest specialty restaurant portfolios at sea
  • Luxury suite travelers seeking The Haven’s ship-within-a-ship experience at a non-luxury-line price point
  • Families and groups who benefit from Free at Sea’s sail-free promotions for 3rd and 4th guests
Norwegian consistently wins awards for its dining program and The Haven luxury complex. If dining flexibility matters to you, NCL leads the mainstream category.

Each line has distinct strengths:

  • Norwegian — Best dining flexibility (Freestyle, no assigned times), strongest specialty restaurant lineup, best all-inclusive value (Free at Sea), and The Haven ship-within-a-ship luxury. More relaxed, adult-friendly atmosphere on many ships.
  • Royal Caribbean — Best onboard attractions (surf simulators, ice rinks, zip lines), most ambitious private island (CocoCay), largest ships with the widest variety of activities. Stronger family appeal for kids 3–12.
  • Carnival — Most affordable, most casual, great for short cruises and first-timers on a budget.

If your priority is eating what you want when you want — and not being assigned a table — Norwegian wins outright.

Norwegian’s newest vessels are the Prima class (Project Leonardo), which launched with Norwegian Prima (2022), Norwegian Viva (2023), and Norwegian Aqua (2025), with more in the class planned:

  • Approximately 3,215 guests — deliberately smaller than competitors’ latest megaships for a more spacious feel
  • The Indulge Food Hall — a market-style casual dining venue with over a dozen concepts
  • The Waterfront — outdoor promenade wrapping the ship with al fresco dining (on Breakaway Plus and newer ships)
  • Tee Time Golf Simulator, Go-Kart track, and thrill slides including the AquaSlide on Norwegian Aqua
  • Updated Haven design with expanded suites and private amenities

Free at Sea

Free at Sea is Norwegian’s flagship promotional program that lets guests choose from a menu of complimentary perks to include with their booking. Typical options:

  • Free Open Bar — an unlimited beverage package covering spirits, wine, beer, and non-alcoholic drinks (18% service charge applies)
  • Free Specialty Dining — a set number of specialty restaurant meals (typically 1–3 depending on voyage length)
  • Free Shore Excursion Credit — a dollar credit per port toward booked excursions
  • Free Wi-Fi — minutes or unlimited depending on promotion
  • Free Friends & Family Sail Free — reduced or complimentary fares for 3rd and 4th guests in a cabin
Free at Sea perks vary by sailing, cabin category, and current promotion. Gratuities on the beverage package are not included. Your Pavlus advisor will clarify exactly which perks apply to your specific booking and compare the value of each option.

The Free at Sea beverage package covers:

  • Spirits, cocktails, and mixed drinks up to a per-drink value limit (typically $15–$20 per drink)
  • Wine by the glass from the standard list
  • Domestic and imported beer
  • Non-alcoholic beverages including sodas, juices, and mocktails
Premium spirits, bottles of wine, and drinks over the value cap are charged at the difference. The package also carries an 18% automatic gratuity on the retail value — typically $14–$20 per person per day. This gratuity is NOT included in “free” and must be budgeted for.

The Free at Sea Specialty Dining perk provides a set number of specialty restaurant meals per voyage — typically 1 dinner on 3–5 night sailings and up to 3 on longer voyages. The meals are valid at most specialty restaurants onboard (some premium venues or tasting menus may carry a surcharge). Reservations are strongly recommended and can be made before sailing through the NCL website or app. Popular venues like Cagney’s and Le Bistro fill up on the first night of booking — reserve as soon as your booking window opens.

Freestyle Dining

Freestyle Dining is Norwegian’s signature dining concept, introduced in 2000: there are no assigned dining times and no set tables. Guests eat when they want, with whom they want, in whichever restaurant they choose. The main dining rooms are open during a broad dinner window (typically 5:30pm–9:30pm). Specialty restaurants require reservations and carry a per-person fee unless covered by Free at Sea. This flexibility is a major differentiator for guests who dislike being told when to eat on a vacation.

Norwegian operates one of the most extensive specialty dining portfolios in mainstream cruising. Options vary by ship but typically include:

  • Cagney’s Steakhouse — USDA prime steaks; a perennial guest favorite
  • Le Bistro — Classic French cuisine; elegant setting
  • Food Republic — Global small-plates concept; perfect for groups with mixed tastes
  • Teppanyaki — Japanese tableside cooking; communal tables; great for groups
  • Ocean Blue — Seafood-focused on newer ships
  • Los Lobos — Mexican restaurant on select ships
  • The Indulge Food Hall — Multi-concept casual hall on Prima class; international street food
  • Onda by Scarpetta — Modern Italian on select ships
With a Free at Sea Specialty Dining perk plus an Unlimited Dining Package upgrade, Norwegian’s specialty dining can rival a land-based restaurant crawl.

The base Norwegian fare covers a generous amount of complimentary dining:

  • Main dining rooms (The Manhattan Room, Taste, Savor on many ships) — full-service breakfast, lunch, and dinner
  • Garden Café — buffet open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner
  • O’Sheehan’s Bar & Grill — casual 24-hour venue (burgers, wings, comfort food) on select ships
  • The Local — 24-hour pub-style casual dining on newer ships
  • Pool grill and casual deck venues

Norwegian can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and most common dietary restrictions across both included and specialty restaurants. Kosher meals must be requested well in advance (at least 4 weeks before sailing) through Norwegian’s Access Desk. Guests with severe allergies should notify Norwegian before sailing through the accessibility request process. With advance notice, the culinary team can prepare customized meals in the main dining room each evening.

The Haven

The Haven is Norwegian’s exclusive suite complex — a “ship within a ship” occupying a private section of the vessel, accessible by keycard only. Haven guests enjoy a completely different cruise experience:

  • A private sundeck with pool, hot tubs, and bar — no crowds
  • The Haven Restaurant — exclusive dining for Haven guests; breakfast, lunch, and dinner
  • 24-hour butler service — unpacking, reservations, in-suite catering, and more
  • Concierge service — priority boarding, disembarkation, show reservations
  • Complimentary beverage package and specialty dining credits included
  • Expanded suite staterooms with premium bedding, larger bathrooms, and premium amenities
The Haven is consistently rated one of the best luxury at-sea values in the industry. Compared to true luxury lines like Seabourn or Regent, Haven pricing is dramatically lower while delivering a genuinely comparable private experience.

Haven suite categories vary by ship but typically include:

  • Haven Courtyard Penthouse — Entry-level Haven; access to all Haven amenities with a standard suite footprint
  • Haven Penthouse Suite — Larger living area with separate bedroom and premium furnishings
  • Haven Deluxe Owner’s Suite with Large Balcony — Generous outdoor space, master bedroom with king bed
  • Haven Duplex Penthouse — Two-story suite with winding staircase; spectacular views from upper-deck position
  • The Haven Three-Bedroom Family Villa — Multiple bedrooms for families or groups; butler service and all Haven amenities
Haven cabins sell out quickly on popular sailings. Call Pavlus at 800-528-9300 to check availability early — 12+ months ahead for peak sailings.

For many guests, The Haven represents the best value in luxury cruising. When you factor in the included beverage package, specialty dining credits, butler service, private pool and restaurant, and priority everything, the effective cost difference between a standard balcony and Haven is often much smaller than the sticker price suggests. Guests who have stayed in The Haven almost universally report they would not sail Norwegian any other way. It is particularly compelling for honeymoons, anniversaries, and milestone celebrations where the private atmosphere and service genuinely elevate the experience.

Onboard Experience

Great Stirrup Cay is Norwegian’s private island in the Bahamas, exclusively for NCL guests. Unlike most private islands, Great Stirrup Cay requires tendering (small boat from ship to shore) rather than a direct dock — this can mean wait times in high-season. Activities include:

  • Multiple beach areas with complimentary chair access
  • Water sports rentals (kayaks, paddleboards, snorkel gear)
  • The Getaway Beach Club — premium beach area with upgraded seating (extra fee)
  • Island BBQ lunch (included)
  • Snorkeling over a reef directly from the beach
Great Stirrup Cay is a pleasant stop but more rustic than competitors’ private islands like CocoCay or Ocean Cay. Manage expectations accordingly.

Norwegian’s entertainment portfolio is strong, particularly on larger ships:

  • Broadway and West End productionsKinky Boots, Million Dollar Quartet, Choir of Man, and others depending on ship
  • Second City comedy — Improv comedy shows on most ships (partnership with the famous Chicago comedy company)
  • Howl at the Moon dueling pianos — Interactive piano bar shows
  • Live music throughout the ship — Jazz, rock, and pop acts at various venues
  • Observation Lounge on newer ships — stunning panoramic views and live music

Norwegian’s Splash Academy offers complimentary supervised programming for children aged 3–12, divided by age group. Entourage is the dedicated teen lounge and program for ages 13–17. Babysitting services are available for younger children at an additional fee. Guppies is an interactive program for infants and toddlers (ages 6 months–3 years) with parents present. Norwegian is a solid family line, though not as character/IP-driven as Disney or as attraction-heavy as Royal Caribbean.

Staterooms & Cabins

Norwegian’s cabin categories include:

  • Studio — Single-occupancy cabins on select ships (Norwegian Epic, Getaway, Breakaway, Prima); no single supplement; access to the Studio Lounge — a popular feature for solo travelers
  • Interior — No window; most affordable; standard footprint
  • Oceanview — Fixed porthole or picture window
  • Balcony — Most popular category; private outdoor space
  • Mini-Suite — Larger room with separate sitting area and whirlpool tub on most ships
  • The Haven suites — Full suite amenities with access to the Haven complex
Norwegian’s Studio cabins are a standout feature for solo travelers — no single supplement and a built-in social community through the Studio Lounge make NCL one of the most solo-friendly mainstream lines.

Norwegian is one of the best mainstream lines for solo travel. The Studio cabin concept (available on Norwegian Epic, Getaway, Breakaway, Escape, Bliss, Encore, Prima, and Viva) provides single-occupancy cabins at a solo-friendly price with no single supplement — a significant savings versus other lines that charge 100–200% single supplements. The Studio Lounge creates an informal social hub for solo travelers. For sailings without Studio cabins, Norwegian sometimes offers reduced single supplements on select departures.

Pavlus has been selling Norwegian Cruise Line and is one of NCL’s top-volume travel agencies. Our advisors have personally sailed Norwegian’s ships, know The Haven experience firsthand, and regularly receive ship familiarization updates from Norwegian. When you call to ask whether the Haven on Norwegian Prima is different from the Haven on Norwegian Escape — we can answer from direct experience.

Contact us at 800-528-9300. Pavlus acts as your advocate with Norwegian. Common situations where our support is valuable include itinerary changes, ship swaps, pricing disputes, pre-cruise dining reservation issues, and post-sailing concerns. When Norwegian changes a sailing — as they sometimes do — having an experienced advisor in your corner means you’re not navigating NCL’s hold queues alone.

Yes. Pavlus advisors actively monitor your booking for Norwegian fare reductions before final payment. If a better rate becomes available on your sailing and cabin category, we’ll contact you to discuss repricing. Norwegian’s price protection policies vary by fare type — we’ll confirm at booking whether your rate qualifies and keep an eye on it throughout the booking window.

Having these details ready makes the call faster:

  • Approximate travel dates and flexibility
  • Number of guests, ages, and cabin preferences (balcony, Haven, studio)
  • Destination preference (Caribbean, Alaska, Europe, etc.)
  • Which Free at Sea perks interest you most
  • Your Latitudes Rewards number(s)
  • Budget range per person

Booking windows vary by ship and itinerary:

  • The Haven suites — 12–18 months; Haven fills first on every sailing
  • Alaska and Europe itineraries — 9–12 months for best cabin selection
  • Holiday sailings (Christmas, spring break) — 12+ months
  • Caribbean mainstream sailings — 6–9 months for most cabin categories
Norwegian’s Free at Sea promotions are strongest early. Booking early locks in the best perk selection before promotional packages change.

Latitudes Rewards

Latitudes Rewards has five tiers based on cruise points (earned per night sailed):

  • Bronze (0–29 pts) — Welcome gift, priority check-in access begins
  • Silver (30–54 pts) — Priority check-in, laundry discount, onboard credit
  • Gold (55–79 pts) — Complimentary dinner for two at specialty restaurant, priority tender boarding
  • Platinum (80–174 pts) — Free Wi-Fi minutes, complimentary amenities, priority disembarkation
  • Ambassador (175+ pts) — Dedicated Ambassador hotline, maximum benefits, complimentary cabin upgrades when available

Latitudes Rewards points accrue at 1 point per night sailed in a standard interior or oceanview cabin, with multipliers for higher cabin categories: balcony earns 1 additional point per night, mini-suite earns 2 additional points, and The Haven earns 3 additional points per night. Sailing consecutive back-to-back voyages is the fastest path to tier advancement. Norwegian periodically offers double-points promotions on select sailings — your Pavlus advisor can flag opportunities. Points are also earned through Norwegian’s credit card partner program.

Deposits & Cancellation

Norwegian deposits are typically $250 per person for most sailings, though this varies by voyage length and cabin category:

  • Short sailings (3–5 nights): deposits may be lower
  • Haven suites: higher deposits are common given the cabin value
  • Final payment is due 120 days before departure for sailings 7+ nights; 90 days for shorter sailings
Norwegian’s deposit and cancellation policies vary by fare type. Promotional and discounted rates may carry stricter non-refundable terms. Your Pavlus advisor will confirm the specific terms for your booking.

Travel insurance is strongly recommended for any Norwegian sailing. Norwegian offers its own BesAFe Travel Protection plan, but independent policies from providers like Travel Guard or Allianz often offer broader coverage. Key protections to prioritize: trip cancellation and interruption, emergency medical evacuation, and Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) coverage — which must typically be purchased within 14–21 days of your initial deposit. Your Pavlus advisor can walk you through options at the time of booking.

Norwegian adds a daily service charge (gratuity) to all guest accounts — currently around $20 per person per day in standard cabins, with a higher rate for Haven and suite guests. This is charged to your onboard account and can be pre-paid before sailing. Note: the Free at Sea beverage package carries an additional 18% gratuity on the package retail value (typically $14–$20/day) that is also charged to your account — this is the most frequently misunderstood cost on Norwegian bookings. Budget for both when calculating your total trip cost.

Norwegian’s pricing policies vary by fare type. Flexible fares generally allow repricing to a lower available rate before final payment. Promotional and deeply discounted fares may not qualify for repricing. Pavlus advisors monitor active bookings for fare reductions and will advise when a repricing opportunity arises — and whether the new rate’s restrictions make it a net improvement for your specific booking.

Norwegian has a strong Alaska program operating from Seattle and Vancouver, with ships well-suited to Alaska glacier and fjord viewing. Norwegian’s Alaska ships typically include the Observation Lounge — a large, forward-facing glass-enclosed venue perfect for scenic glacier cruising — and naturalist enrichment programming. Norwegian doesn’t own land infrastructure in Alaska (unlike Princess), so it’s primarily a cruise-only Alaska experience. For guests focused on the cruise itself with itineraries to Juneau, Skagway, and Glacier Bay, Norwegian delivers an excellent product.

Yes — Norwegian has a growing European program including the Western and Eastern Mediterranean, Norwegian fjords, Baltic Sea capitals, Iceland, and the British Isles. Norwegian Escape, Gem, Jade, and other ships rotate through European deployments seasonally. Norwegian’s Freestyle Dining model resonates particularly well in Europe where travelers value flexibility. Itineraries typically embark from Barcelona, Copenhagen, Athens (Piraeus), or Southampton. Your Pavlus advisor can pair European flights and pre-cruise hotel nights with any NCL European sailing.
