About Cunard

Cunard is one of the oldest and most storied names in ocean travel, founded in 1839 by Sir Samuel Cunard — now part of Carnival Corporation. They operate three ships: Queen Mary 2 (flagship), Queen Victoria, and Queen Anne (launched 2024). Cunard is the only line still offering a regularly scheduled transatlantic crossing service — the QM2’s Southampton to New York route — maintaining a tradition that has defined ocean travel for over 180 years. The Cunard identity is rooted in British tradition, formal elegance, White Star Service, and the Golden Age of the ocean liner.

Cunard occupies a genuinely unique niche that doesn’t map neatly onto other luxury lines:

  • Cunard vs. Seabourn/Silversea: Those lines emphasize intimacy and near-unlimited all-inclusive luxury on small ships. Cunard ships are larger and more formal, with a British cultural identity rather than contemporary luxury positioning. The QM2 is the only ocean liner still making regular transatlantic crossings — nothing else offers that experience.
  • Cunard vs. Holland America: Both have strong heritage identities, but Cunard is more formal, more British, and specifically associated with the transatlantic crossing tradition. HAL is more destination-exploratory; Cunard is more about the voyage itself — particularly on the QM2.
  • Cunard vs. Celebrity: Celebrity is contemporary luxury; Cunard is classical tradition. Very different aesthetics and audiences.
For the QM2 transatlantic crossing or a formally elegant British ocean liner experience, there is no comparable alternative. Cunard is in a category of its own.

For the right traveler, Cunard is incomparable. The Queen Mary 2 transatlantic crossing is genuinely one of the great travel experiences — seven days at sea on a real ocean liner, with a sense of occasion and history that no modern cruise ship can replicate. The Queens Grill delivers dining and service that rivals the finest luxury ships afloat. The lecture program, ballroom dancing, afternoon tea, and formal evenings are beloved traditions that Cunard guests return for year after year.

Cunard does require an affinity for British tradition and formality — travelers who prefer contemporary casual luxury will be better served by Celebrity or Oceania. But for those who embrace it, few voyages are as memorable.

Cunard’s history spans nearly two centuries of ocean travel. Sir Samuel Cunard founded the British and North American Royal Mail Steam Packet Company in 1839, winning a Royal Mail contract to carry post between Britain and North America. The RMS Britannia completed the first scheduled transatlantic mail crossing in July 1840. Cunard ships have carried royalty, presidents, and immigrants; survived both World Wars (serving as troop ships); launched some of the most famous vessels ever built — including the RMS Mauretania, RMS Lusitania, Queen Mary, and Queen Elizabeth (the largest ship ever built at her launch in 1938). Carnival Corporation acquired Cunard in 1998, and the line has continued to invest in the brand’s heritage identity.

White Star Service is Cunard’s service philosophy — a commitment to attentive, personalized, formally trained service that reflects the Golden Age of ocean liner travel. The name evokes the tradition of the great Atlantic passenger liners and signals to guests that they will be treated with the formality and care associated with Cunard’s historic legacy. In practical terms, it means staff who are extensively trained, attentive without being intrusive, and oriented around anticipating guest needs rather than merely responding to requests. The Grills restaurants in particular exemplify White Star Service at its finest.

Queen Anne is Cunard’s newest ship, launched in May 2024 and the first new Cunard vessel in 14 years. Key features:

  • Approximately 3,000 guests — slightly larger than Queen Victoria
  • Contemporary design that respects Cunard’s heritage while updating the aesthetic
  • New dining concepts including The Pavilion (a glass-enclosed outdoor dining and social space) and additional specialty venues
  • Expanded entertainment spaces including a new theatre venue
  • Updated stateroom design with modern finishes while maintaining Cunard’s characteristic elegance
  • Maintains the full Grill class structure: Queens Grill, Princess Grill, and Britannia
Queen Anne is sailing a diverse initial deployment including Mediterranean, Northern Europe, and transatlantic crossings. She represents Cunard’s investment in the brand’s future while honoring its past.

The Queens

Cunard currently operates three Queens:

  • Queen Mary 2 (QM2) — The flagship; 2,620 guests. The only ocean liner still in regular transatlantic service between Southampton and New York. Purpose-built for the open ocean, the QM2 features a planetarium, the largest dance floor at sea, 12 kennels for pets, and an onboard Grills outdoor terrace. She entered service in 2004.
  • Queen Victoria — 1,980 guests. A classic Cunarder known for world voyages, European itineraries, and a stately traditional interior design. She entered service in 2007.
  • Queen Anne — Cunard’s newest ship, launched 2024; approximately 3,000 guests. The most contemporary Cunard vessel, with updated design and new dining concepts while maintaining the full Grill class tradition.

A QM2 transatlantic crossing between Southampton (UK) and New York takes 7 nights with five consecutive sea days in the middle of the Atlantic. This is a true ocean crossing — not a repositioning cruise with port calls — and the QM2 is specifically engineered for North Atlantic conditions with a deeper draft and more powerful stabilizers than typical cruise ships.

Crossings run in both directions throughout the year. Many guests combine a crossing one-way with a transatlantic flight the other direction as a one-way travel experience. Ask your Pavlus advisor about fly-cruise combinations from New York or London.

Cunard’s cabin hierarchy is tied directly to the Grill class dining system:

  • Britannia Interior, Oceanview, and Balcony Staterooms — Standard staterooms; dining in the main Britannia Restaurant. Well-appointed and comfortable for the price.
  • Britannia Club Staterooms — Select balcony staterooms with access to the dedicated Britannia Club dining room (smaller, more personalized than the main restaurant) and club-level perks.
  • Princess Grill Suites — Junior suites qualifying for the dedicated Princess Grill restaurant, Princess Grill Lounge, and priority amenities.
  • Queens Grill Suites — Full suites with butler service, personalized menus in the Queens Grill restaurant, access to the Queens Grill Lounge and outdoor terrace, and the highest level of Cunard service.

Yes — QM2 is unique among ocean-going ships in offering 12 kennels for dogs and cats on transatlantic crossings. The kennels are managed by a dedicated kennel master, and pet owners may visit their animals at scheduled times each day. This service is available only on transatlantic crossings — not on QM2 cruise itineraries. Health certificates, vaccination records, and breed documentation are required.

Kennel spaces are very limited (12 total) and book out far in advance — often 12–18 months ahead for popular crossing dates. If traveling with a pet is a priority, call Pavlus immediately at 800-528-9300 to check availability.

Dining & The Grill Classes

Cunard’s dining is tied to your stateroom category in a hierarchical system that is central to the Cunard experience:

  • Britannia Restaurant — The grand main dining room for the majority of guests; a multi-deck grand staircase design in the classic ocean liner tradition. Full table-service breakfast, lunch (sea days), and dinner with traditional and contemporary menus.
  • Britannia Club — Available to Britannia Club stateroom guests; a dedicated, smaller dining room with a more personalized experience and enhanced menu.
  • Princess Grill — For Princess Grill Suite guests; an intimate restaurant with refined service and more individually paced dining. Access to the Princess Grill Lounge.
  • Queens Grill — Exclusive to Queens Grill Suite guests; widely considered one of the finest dining experiences at sea. Personalized menus, dedicated waiter teams, and a level of attentiveness that rivals the world’s top restaurants. Access to the Queens Grill Lounge and outdoor terrace.

Cunard fares include:

  • Accommodation
  • All meals in your assigned restaurant (Britannia, Princess Grill, or Queens Grill)
  • Afternoon tea daily — one of Cunard’s most cherished traditions; served in the Queens Room with white-gloved waiters, finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream, and pastries
  • Most onboard entertainment (main theatre productions, ballroom dancing, lectures, cinema)
  • Fitness center access
  • Port taxes and fees

Not included as standard: beverages (charged separately), gratuities, specialty dining, shore excursions, spa services, and casino. Cunard periodically offers all-inclusive promotions bundling drinks and gratuities — significant savings when available — and Pavlus will alert you when these promotions apply to your sailing.

Afternoon tea is one of Cunard’s most beloved daily traditions and a hallmark of the White Star Service. Served each afternoon in the Queens Room — the largest ballroom at sea — it features:

  • White-gloved waiters serving from silver trays and tiered stands
  • Finger sandwiches (cucumber, smoked salmon, egg and cress)
  • Freshly baked scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam
  • Pastries and miniature cakes
  • A selection of teas, including Cunard’s own blend

Afternoon tea is one of those Cunard experiences that guests consistently describe as a highlight — genuinely different from a buffet or casual snack break, it is a proper British ceremony conducted with full formality and charm.

Yes — depending on the ship, Cunard offers additional dining venues:

  • The Verandah (QM2) — A specialty French fine-dining restaurant with an additional cover charge; one of the most acclaimed specialty restaurants at sea
  • Golden Lion Pub — Casual British pub fare including fish & chips, burgers, and curries; served at lunch (modest additional charge or included depending on sailing)
  • King’s Court / The Lido — Casual buffet alternative for breakfast and lunch
  • The Pavilion (Queen Anne) — Glass-enclosed outdoor dining and social venue; a new addition on Cunard’s newest ship

White Star Dining is Cunard’s umbrella dining concept that governs the full dining program across all venues.

The Cunard Experience

Cunard maintains one of the most celebrated dress code traditions in cruising — an important part of the Cunard identity:

  • Formal nights (typically 2–3 per voyage; more on transatlantic crossings): Black tie (tuxedo) or dark suit with tie for gentlemen; evening gown, formal cocktail dress, or elegant separates for ladies. Formal nights are gala evenings embraced enthusiastically by Cunard guests.
  • Semi-Formal evenings: Jacket and tie or smart lounge suit for gentlemen; cocktail dress or smart occasion wear for ladies.
  • Smart Casual evenings: Smart collared shirt or blazer; smart trousers. No shorts, jeans, or sportswear in evening dining venues.
The Cunard dress code is part of the appeal — not a burden. Guests who embrace formal evenings typically cite them as among the most memorable experiences of the voyage. Tuxedo rental is available onboard if you prefer not to pack one, and many guests use the QM2 crossing as a reason to invest in proper evening wear for the first time.

Cunard’s entertainment program is among the most intellectually rich in cruising:

  • Speakers and Lecturers — Cunard is famous for its speaker program: academics, journalists, authors, scientists, and public figures present substantive lectures daily. On the QM2 transatlantic crossing, five consecutive sea days allow for an unusually rich lecture schedule.
  • Ballroom dancing — The Queens Room on QM2 is the largest ballroom at sea. Professional dance instructors offer lessons by day; full ballroom events with dance bands by night. The social dancing tradition is one of Cunard’s most unique offerings.
  • Royal Court Theatre — West End-quality productions, classical concerts, and guest entertainers
  • Illuminations Planetarium (QM2 only) — A full digital planetarium showing astronomy presentations and films; the only planetarium at sea
  • Library, bookshop, art gallery, card room, and board games

Cunard ships feature the Canyon Ranch SpaClub — one of the most recognized wellness brands in the world, brought aboard to deliver their signature programs at sea. Facilities include:

  • Full treatment menu: massages, facials, body treatments, and acupuncture
  • Thermal suite with heated stone loungers, steam rooms, aromatic rooms, and sauna
  • Full fitness center with cardio and strength equipment
  • Canyon Ranch fitness and wellness classes
  • Hair salon and beauty services

The QM2 also features one of the largest pools at sea, an outdoor promenade deck that circles the entire ship, and a Games Deck with paddle tennis and shuffleboard.

Yes — Cunard’s World Voyages are iconic in the cruise industry. The QM2 and Queen Victoria each undertake annual world voyage programs covering multiple continents over 100+ days. These are often structured as full circumnavigations with segments bookable independently — guests can join for a 2-week segment or commit to the full voyage.

Cunard World Voyages are particularly prized for their combination of destination breadth, the onboard enrichment program (lectures, entertainment, formal evenings), and the social community that develops over an extended shared voyage. Bookings for world voyages typically open 18–24 months in advance and popular Grill suites sell out quickly.

Destinations & Itineraries

Cunard’s itinerary program is centered on regions that complement the line’s heritage and traditions:

  • Transatlantic crossings — Southampton to/from New York on QM2; multiple crossings per year throughout the sailing season
  • Europe — Mediterranean, Northern Europe, British Isles, Baltic, Norway, and Iceland
  • Caribbean — Winter Caribbean sailings from Southampton and Fort Lauderdale
  • North America — New England, Canada, and US Eastern Seaboard
  • South America — Including Cape Horn and South America circumnavigations
  • Asia and the Far East
  • World Voyages — Annual circumnavigations of 100–150+ days

The most popular approach is the one-way crossing + one-way flight combination:

  • Eastbound: Fly to New York, board QM2 in New York (Brooklyn Cruise Terminal), cross to Southampton in 7 nights, then explore the UK and Europe before flying home
  • Westbound: Fly to London, explore Britain, then board QM2 in Southampton and cross to New York in 7 nights, arriving for a US vacation or direct flight home

Cunard and Pavlus can assist with air arrangements to make the logistics of a one-way crossing seamless. Positioning from London to Southampton and New York airport transfers are also easily arranged. Your Pavlus advisor can build a complete itinerary incorporating both the crossing and pre/post land stay.

Practical Information

Deposits are typically $500 per person for most voyages; higher for World Voyage bookings. Grill suite deposits are also higher.

Final payment is due 90 days before sailing for standard voyages; 120 days for World Voyages.

Cancellation penalties:

  • 91+ days: deposit forfeited
  • 90–56 days: 25% of total fare
  • 55–29 days: 50% of total fare
  • 28–15 days: 75% of total fare
  • 14 days or fewer: 100% of total fare
Travel insurance is strongly recommended for all Cunard voyages, particularly World Voyages where the total investment can be substantial. Ask your Pavlus advisor about coverage options.

The Cunard World Club rewards returning guests with four tiers based on nights sailed:

  • Red — 1+ nights: welcome to the program; onboard recognition
  • Silver — 15+ nights: priority embarkation, onboard credits on future voyages
  • Gold — 50+ nights: expanded OBC, specialty dining discounts, priority tendering
  • Platinum — 150+ nights: highest-level perks, Grills lounge access events, complimentary specialty dining, recognition at the highest level of Cunard service

Cabin grade also affects tier advancement — Grill suite nights are weighted more heavily. Provide your World Club number to Pavlus at booking to ensure correct credit.

Gratuities on Cunard are charged separately as a daily Hotel and Dining Charge added to your onboard account:

  • Britannia staterooms: Approximately $14–$16 per person per day
  • Britannia Club staterooms: Approximately $16–$18 per person per day
  • Princess Grill and Queens Grill suites: Approximately $18–$23 per person per day

These can be pre-paid at booking through Pavlus if you prefer to settle in advance. Cunard periodically runs promotions where gratuities are included — Pavlus will alert you when these apply to your sailing.

Cunard can be an excellent choice for solo travelers, particularly on the QM2 transatlantic crossing and longer voyages where the onboard intellectual and social community develops over time. The lecture program, ballroom dancing classes, shared dining tables, and rich social calendar give solo guests ample opportunity to connect with fellow passengers without needing a travel companion. Single supplement pricing varies by voyage and cabin category — Cunard periodically offers reduced single supplements on select sailings. Call Pavlus at 800-528-9300 to check current single pricing on your preferred voyage. The social atmosphere of a Cunard crossing — particularly the ballroom evenings and lecture program — is well-suited to confident solo travelers who enjoy intelligent conversation and cultural engagement.

For most Cunard voyages:

  • Passport — Required for all international voyages; must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the voyage end date
  • Visas — Required for some destinations (e.g., India, Russia if operating, some Asian countries). Cunard provides a country-by-country visa guide; your Pavlus advisor will flag requirements for your specific itinerary.
  • Cruise ticket and luggage tags — Downloaded or mailed prior to sailing
  • Health documentation — Required health forms completed online prior to boarding
  • Pet documentation — For guests traveling with dogs or cats on QM2 transatlantic crossings: health certificate, vaccination records, microchip confirmation
