About Azamara

Azamara is built around a single philosophy: destination immersion. Where most cruise lines treat ports as brief stops between sea days, Azamara deliberately schedules overnight stays, late-night departures, and extended port calls — giving guests evening access to destinations when cruise crowds disperse, local restaurants fill up, and the authentic atmosphere of a city emerges.

Their ships carry approximately 690 guests each — small enough to access ports that large ships cannot enter — and the crew-to-guest ratio is high enough to feel genuinely personal. The line also includes their signature AzAmazing Evenings: exclusive cultural events ashore included with every sailing.

If you’ve cruised before and found yourself frustrated by too many sea days or too little time in port, Azamara is likely the antidote. Their itinerary philosophy is fundamentally different from mainstream cruising.

AzAmazing Evenings are exclusive, Azamara-hosted cultural experiences ashore — included with every sailing at no additional charge. These are not generic shore excursions; they are private events arranged specifically for Azamara guests, typically in a historic or culturally significant venue: a concert in an ancient amphitheater, a traditional festival celebration, an illuminated palace courtyard, or a local performance that would otherwise be inaccessible to individual tourists.

One AzAmazing Evening is included per voyage, typically in the most culturally significant port on the itinerary. Transportation from the ship to the event and back is provided. They are consistently rated among the top highlights by returning Azamara guests.

These three lines each occupy a different niche in upper-premium cruising:

  • Azamara vs. Celebrity: Both were formerly under Royal Caribbean Group (Azamara was sold to Sycamore Partners in 2021). Celebrity has larger ships, more onboard entertainment and amenities, and is more of a classic cruise experience. Azamara’s smaller ships, destination-immersion philosophy, and included beverages and gratuities make it a fundamentally different proposition — more focused on where you go than what’s onboard.
  • Azamara vs. Viking Ocean: Viking is closer in positioning — both are destination-focused and all-inclusive in spirit. Viking ships are newer and carry more guests (930), while Azamara is somewhat more intimate. Viking’s excursion inclusions tend to be more generous; Azamara’s overnight port strategy is more distinctive.

Azamara tends to attract experienced cruisers who have sailed mainstream and premium lines and want something more destination-driven.

For travelers who value destinations above all, Azamara represents outstanding value. When you factor in what’s included — house beverages, gratuities, specialty dining, Wi-Fi, the AzAmazing Evening, self-service laundry, and shuttle service in many ports — the all-in cost compares very favorably with lines that charge separately for each of these. The overnight-in-port strategy also means you genuinely spend more time in destinations, reducing the impulse to book multiple (expensive) shore excursions just to see a place properly.

Azamara is particularly good value on complex itineraries like the Black Sea, Adriatic, or Southeast Asia, where the overnight stays allow deep exploration that shorter port calls simply cannot provide.

Azamara was founded in 2007 as an upper-premium brand within Royal Caribbean Group, originally operating under the name Azamara Club Cruises. In March 2021, Royal Caribbean Group sold Azamara to Sycamore Partners, a private equity firm, making it an independent cruise line for the first time. At the time of the sale, the fleet comprised three ships: Azamara Quest, Azamara Journey, and Azamara Pursuit (which had joined the fleet in 2018). Azamara subsequently grew to four vessels with the addition of Azamara Onward in 2022, acquired from P&O Cruises and extensively refurbished. The line rebranded simply as Azamara in 2021 and has continued to refine its destination-immersion product under independent ownership.

Azamara builds overnight port stays directly into their itinerary design — this is not a bonus, it’s a core scheduling philosophy. An overnight means the ship is docked (or at anchor) in a destination through the night, allowing guests to:

  • Experience the destination after evening cruise ships have departed
  • Attend evening cultural events, concerts, or festivals
  • Dine in local restaurants for dinner — not just lunch
  • Explore illuminated historic centers without daytime crowds
  • Stay out late and return to the ship on their own schedule

Late-night departures (typically leaving port between 10 pm and midnight) are similarly designed to maximize evening time ashore. Azamara typically includes 2–4 overnight stays per voyage depending on itinerary length.

What's Included

Azamara offers one of the most comprehensive inclusions packages in the upper-premium segment. Every fare includes:

  • Specialty dining — Prime C steakhouse and Aqualina Italian restaurant are included for all guests on most sailings
  • House beverages — House brand spirits, wine, beer, bottled water, specialty coffees and teas, and soft drinks throughout the day and evening
  • Gratuities — Crew gratuities included for all service staff
  • Wi-Fi — Included for all guests (speed and access vary; basic browsing for all)
  • AzAmazing Evening — One exclusive cultural event ashore per voyage
  • Self-service laundry — Complimentary use of onboard launderettes
  • Shuttle service — In many ports where the ship docks away from the city center, Azamara provides complimentary shuttles into town
  • Port taxes and fees

Standard shore excursions are not included in the base Azamara fare but are available to purchase through Azamara’s Land Discoveries program or independently. The AzAmazing Evening (one per sailing) is the included group shore experience. Azamara also sells packages bundling multiple excursions at a discount, as well as independent touring options in many ports.

Because Azamara overnight stays give guests so much time in port, many experienced Azamara travelers prefer independent exploration — walking, taxis, or local guides — rather than ship-organized tours. This is part of what makes the overnight strategy particularly valuable.

Azamara includes house brand beverages throughout the voyage — meaning you do not need to purchase a beverage package separately. Included drinks cover:

  • House wines (red, white, rosé) served with meals and at the bar
  • House spirits (vodka, gin, rum, whiskey, tequila) in well-brand pours
  • Beer (domestic and select imported)
  • Non-alcoholic cocktails, juices, soft drinks, sparkling and still water
  • Specialty coffees, teas, and hot chocolate

Premium spirits, premium wines by the glass, and specialty cocktails above the house tier are available for purchase. Azamara does not include a formal wine package — but for guests happy with quality house pours, the bar tab is effectively zero.

Despite Azamara’s broad inclusions, the following are additional:

  • Shore excursions beyond the AzAmazing Evening
  • Premium spirits and wines above the included house tier
  • Spa and salon services (the AzaSpa by Sanctum is a paid venue)
  • Casino gaming
  • Personal laundry service (self-service launderettes are free; valet laundry and dry cleaning are charged)
  • Photographs and video packages
  • Gift shop purchases
  • Medical services
Azamara’s breadth of inclusions means most guests spend far less onboard than on a comparable premium line where beverages and gratuities are extra.

Ships & Staterooms

Azamara operates four boutique ships, each carrying approximately 686–700 guests:

  • Azamara Quest — Original Azamara vessel; extensively refurbished
  • Azamara Journey — Sister ship to Quest; same layout and amenities
  • Azamara Onward — Joined the fleet in 2022 after significant renovation from a former vessel; expanded to roughly 716 guests
  • Azamara Pursuit — Joined the fleet in 2018; same R-class platform as Quest and Journey

All Azamara ships share the same intimate scale, high crew-to-guest ratio (approximately 1:1.7), and destination-immersion philosophy. The smaller ship size is a fundamental part of the product — it enables access to ports like Kotor, Dubrovnik, and UNESCO-protected harbors that large ships cannot enter.

Azamara offers four main stateroom tiers:

  • Interior Staterooms — Well-appointed rooms without a window; best value for guests who spend most of their time in port
  • Ocean View Staterooms — Fixed window with sea views; no balcony
  • Veranda Staterooms — Private furnished balcony; the most popular category and recommended for longer voyages
  • Club Suites — Expanded suites including Club Continent Suites and Club World Owner’s Suites, with butler service, priority dining reservations, complimentary room service, and enhanced amenities
Given the destination-immersion philosophy, many Azamara guests choose veranda staterooms to enjoy evenings on their balcony while in port — especially on overnight stays when the city lights are visible from the ship.

Azamara’s suite tier provides meaningful step-up amenities beyond the standard inclusions:

  • Butler service — Dedicated butler for suite guests
  • Priority reservations — Preferred booking windows for specialty dining and shore excursions
  • Enhanced in-suite amenities — Upgraded toiletries, pillow menu, and bathrobes
  • Complimentary room service — Available throughout the day and night at no additional charge
  • Welcome bottle of spirits and afternoon canapés
  • Expanded living space and in many cases a separate bedroom and sitting area in the Owner’s Suites

Dining

Azamara ships typically offer four dining venues:

  • The Restaurant — The main dining room with multi-course breakfast, lunch, and dinner service and an open-seating format
  • Prime C — Azamara’s steakhouse, featuring premium cuts, seafood, and a classic American steakhouse menu; included for all guests on most sailings
  • Aqualina — Italian regional cuisine with a menu that changes per voyage region; included for all guests on most sailings
  • Windows Café — The casual buffet venue for breakfast, lunch, and light snacks throughout the day

The inclusion of both specialty restaurants is a genuine differentiator — on most premium lines, steakhouse and Italian dining carry a per-person cover charge of $30–$65.

Azamara operates fully open seating across all dining venues — there are no assigned tables or fixed dining times. Guests may dine whenever the restaurant is open and may request a table for two or join other guests at shared tables. This flexibility is particularly valued on Azamara because guests are often ashore in the evenings during overnight stays and may return to the ship for dinner at varying times.

Azamara’s culinary quality is consistently rated above mainstream cruise lines and competitive with upper-premium options. The smaller ship size means the kitchen operates at a more manageable scale, and the destination-immersion philosophy extends to menus — regional dishes and local ingredients are incorporated into dining based on where the ship is sailing. Mediterranean itineraries, for example, feature fresh seafood, local cheeses, and olive oil-focused dishes that reflect the surrounding culinary culture.

Prime C and Aqualina receive consistently strong reviews from guests who note that the quality rivals standalone restaurants — particularly impressive given that both are included rather than surcharge dining.

Yes — Azamara accommodates most dietary needs with advance notice. The culinary team handles vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and common allergy requirements across all dining venues. Notify Azamara (or Pavlus at time of booking) of any dietary needs so they are logged in the reservation prior to embarkation. For very specific requirements such as kosher or severe nut allergies, contact Pavlus well in advance of the sailing at 800-528-9300.

Onboard Experience

Azamara’s onboard programming reflects their destination-first philosophy — evenings are often spent ashore, so the ship’s entertainment calendar is calibrated accordingly. Onboard offerings include:

  • Main lounge shows — Nightly production shows, cabaret acts, and local performers brought aboard in port
  • Enrichment lectures — Destination experts, historians, and specialists presenting on the regions being visited
  • Culinary demonstrations — Cooking classes and chef demonstrations incorporating local cuisines
  • Casino — Small casino with table games and slots
  • AzaSpa by Sanctum — Full-service spa with treatments, thermal suite, and beauty salon
  • Pool deck, hot tubs, fitness center, and yoga classes

Azamara’s AzaSpa by Sanctum offers a full range of spa treatments including massages, facials, body wraps, and beauty services. The spa features a thermal suite with heated tile loungers, steam room, and sauna. Treatments are priced individually. The fitness center is equipped with cardio and strength machines, and yoga and fitness classes are available. Spa services are not included in the fare but are competitively priced relative to other upper-premium lines.

Azamara is celebrated for its unusually warm and social onboard community. With only 686–700 guests and a high crew-to-guest ratio, the ship develops a genuine sense of camaraderie over the course of a voyage — especially on longer sailings. Guests frequently comment that they know their fellow travelers by name within a few days and develop friendships that extend beyond the trip. The intimacy of the ship, combined with shared AzAmazing Evening experiences and a communal passion for destinations, creates a distinctive social dynamic not found on larger ships.

Destinations & Itineraries

Azamara focuses primarily on regions where overnight and extended port stays provide the greatest value:

  • Mediterranean — Western, Eastern, and Adriatic; including smaller Croatian, Greek, and Turkish ports inaccessible to large ships
  • Northern Europe — British Isles, Scandinavia, Baltic, Iceland, and the Norwegian fjords
  • Asia — Japan, Southeast Asia, China, and India
  • Middle East — Arabia, Holy Land, and Egypt itineraries
  • Africa — Southern Africa, East Africa, and West Africa sailings
  • Caribbean and Latin America — Select winter deployments
  • Australia & New Zealand — Seasonal deployments

Azamara does not operate in Alaska — their focus is on regions where the overnight strategy best serves exploratory travelers.

Azamara’s strongest itineraries are those that make the most of the overnight-in-port strategy:

  • Adriatic and Greek Isles — Overnight stays in Dubrovnik, Kotor, and Santorini allow evening exploration when day-trippers have gone
  • Japan Intensive — Multi-night stays in Tokyo (Yokohama), Kyoto (Osaka/Kobe), and other Japanese ports for truly immersive exploration
  • Black Sea — One of the few lines that has sailed into the Black Sea with overnights in Istanbul, Odessa, and Georgia
  • Holy Land & Egypt — Multiple nights in Israel, Jordan (Petra access), and Egypt for comprehensive historical touring
  • India and Southeast Asia — Overnight stays in Mumbai, Colombo, Bangkok, and Ho Chi Minh City for deep cultural immersion

Azamara’s smaller ship size (approximately 181 meters / 594 feet in length) enables access to ports with restricted berth lengths, shallow draft requirements, or UNESCO-controlled harbor limits. Examples include:

  • Kotor, Montenegro — UNESCO-protected bay; larger ships are increasingly restricted
  • Dubrovnik, Croatia — City has implemented passenger number limits; smaller ships face fewer restrictions
  • Hvar, Croatia — Small island harbor requiring smaller vessels
  • Monemvasia, Greece — Boutique medieval port accessible only to smaller ships
  • Nagasaki and smaller Japanese ports — Accessible when mega-ships cannot berth

Port exclusivity is part of what Azamara delivers — not just more time in port, but access to different ports.

Azamara maintains a relaxed but polished dress standard — appropriate for the upscale but unpretentious atmosphere onboard:

  • Smart Casual (most evenings): Collared shirts, smart trousers, or dresses. No shorts or flip-flops in the dining room after 6 pm.
  • Country Club Casual (themed evenings or special nights): Cocktail attire or elegant resort wear welcomed but not required.

There are no mandatory black-tie or formal nights. The demographic tends to be well-traveled and naturally dresses well — but the atmosphere is welcoming rather than intimidating. Daytime deck wear is entirely relaxed.

Yes — Azamara regularly offers solo traveler promotions with reduced or waived single supplements on select sailings. These promotions move quickly and vary by itinerary and departure date. The social atmosphere onboard is particularly well-suited for solo travelers — the intimate ship size means it is easy to meet fellow guests, and Azamara staff are attentive to introducing solo travelers to compatible companions at shared dining tables.

For Azamara’s most popular itineraries, booking 9–12 months in advance is recommended. Key considerations:

  • Mediterranean summer sailings: 12+ months for veranda cabins on peak dates — these sell out consistently
  • Japan itineraries: 12–18 months; Japan sailings are among Azamara’s fastest-selling voyages due to limited overnight stays availability
  • Suites: Book as early as possible; Club World Owner’s Suites are limited to 4–6 per ship and sell out far in advance
  • Last-minute options: Occasionally available 60–90 days out at reduced rates, but cabin selection will be limited

Calling Pavlus early is always worthwhile — we can hold a sailing while you decide with no obligation.
